Alan Preble passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2020, at the age of 81, after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

Alan leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Eileen Hart Preble and their three children; Denise Preble-Mitchell (husband Brian), Timothy Preble (wife Melissa) and Valerie Preble–Stanzione(husband Joseph).  Alan is survived by his three siblings; Roger Preble, Judith Preble-Kenny and Laurie Preble-Hughes.  He also leaves behind his seven grand children; Caitlin Mitchell-Beaird, Connor Mitchell, Kieran Mitchell, Ayla Preble, Benjamin Stanzione, Shennah Preble, Lily Stanzione, as well as his two great grand-daughters.

Alan was a special person to all he met.  He had an infectious personality, a passion for life and he never lost his childish sense of adventure.  He could often be found sipping a cup of coffee in Dunkin Donuts. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all.  He was quick with a joke and you knew you were his friend if he gave you a nickname.  His family and friends were his first love, followed by his devotion to his country and the Marine Corp.  Alan’s second home was upstate in the Adirondack Mountains.  He loved sharing his lake home with his family and friends.

Alan was born, raised and educated in Valhalla, New York.  He married his high school sweetheart, Eileen, in 1961, at Holy Name of Jesus Church.  Growing up in Valhalla, he was known for his love of innocent mischief and giving nicknames to everyone.  He formerly owned and operated Preble Roofing, Company.  Following his retirement in 1999 from Preble Roofing, they moved to Emerald Isle, North Carolina.  Although his passing was in New York with his immediate family at his side, Alan always said he would find his Emerald Isle again in Heaven.

Among other community activities, Alan was a member of the Marine Corp League Swansboro, North Carolina Detachment.  During this time, Alan quickly won the hearts of many with his friendly personality and his humble nature to help anyone in need.  In 2018, Alan was awarded the Marine of the Year awardfrom his detachment and was also a top fundraiser among his community.

Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue Thornwood, New York on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 9:00 PM for visitation.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Alan at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla, New York on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 11:30 AM. Private committal services will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York attended by the immediate family only.  To commemorate Alan’s service to his country, the United States Marine Honor Guard will be present to perform military honors.
